Qianlong Imperial History in Painting: Experiences of the English Ambassador George Macartney (1733-1806) in the East

England was eager to enter into trade relations with China in the eighteenth century, so an embassy was sent to the East for an audience with the emperor in China. The experiences of the embassy in China at the time were recorded, providing the earliest historical depictions of the Old Summer Palace and Qianlong. The meeting of two worlds also left a deep impression on design trends in England at the time.

In the corridor of culture, copperplate prints on display present an image of the Qianlong Emperor as crafted by western hands.
